A new professional hockey team could be coming to Pittsburgh.

New winger Reilly Smith checks a lot of boxes for the Pittsburgh Penguins heading into the 2023-24 season.

The growth of women’s hockey continues to take strides forward and with groundwork being put in place to launch a new professional league, it could find a new home in Pittsburgh.

According to the Associated Press, Pittsburgh is one of the cities being considered for a team in this new league.

Washington, Philadelphia, Boston, and New York are among the American cities being considered while Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, and London, Ontario are being looked at in Canada.

The league is expected to make more announcements in the coming month and are hoping to have help from the NHL and commissioner Gary Bettman.

Much like how the NBA supports the WNBA, this new women’s hockey leagues wants as much help as it can get from the NHL.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have long been a supporter of women's hockey and recently honored the city's first women's team, the Pittsburgh Pennies.

The Pennies were created in 1972 and were a trailblazing team for women's hockey across the world.
