Penguins Entering Next Phase of GM Search

The waiting for a new Pittsburgh Penguins front office shouldn't last much longer.

The Pittsburgh Penguins officially have the 14th overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, but should they be looking to trade it with under two months until the draft?

The Pittsburgh Penguins have been without the focal points of a front office for about a month now, and it doesn’t seem like the jobs will be vacant much longer.

After it was reported by Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts Podcast backed the statement saying the Penguins want to end their search in the next couple of weeks.

Both outlets stated that Fenway Sports Group is wrapping up an opening round of interviews with candidates for both general manager and president of hockey operations positions.

Some other personnel could be added during the process, but it’s hard to tell with such a wide range of opportunities.

FSG relieved three men of their duties the first day into the offseason; Ron Hextall as general manager, Brian Burke as president of hockey operations, and Chris Pryor as assistant GM.

Those three positions will likely be filled with three separate names, but there have also been reports that FSG wants to build a more robust analytics department in Pittsburgh.

While questions have also risen about how long FSG is will to wait for their ideal hire, Friedman believed the Penguins are within a week or two of finalizing some hires.

Dave Beeston of FSG stated following the firings that they wanted to move quickly but wisely in their hiring process.

The postseason likely slowed the process down as multiple fan favorite candidates still have teams vying for the Stanley Cup.

Eric Tulsky was a name on a lot of radars, but with the Carolina Hurricanes advancing to the Eastern Conference Final and the Penguins possibly making a hire in a week, he’s likely out of the running.

If the Toronto Maple Leafs lose their series in five games, expect Kyle Dubas to rocket to the top of many lists for the Penguins.
