The Philadelphia Flyers put an end to their front office search with the removal of an interim tag and an interesting outside hire.
The Pittsburgh Penguins aren’t the only NHL team in the commonwealth on the hunt for a new general manager.
The Philadelphia Flyers have been searching for a new front office staff ever since firing Chuck Fletcher as general manager in March and they have officially landed their guys.
It was announced that interim general manager Daniel Briere will be elevated to full-time GM and Keith Jones was hired as president of hockey operations.
Both Briere and Jones suited up for the Flyers during their playing days; Briere played for 364 games between 2007 and 2013 and Jones 131 from 1998 to the end of his career in 2000.
Briere has worked in the Flyers front office since his retirement from playing in 2015; in 2017, Briere was given the task of overseeing the Maine Mariners and was promoted to special advisor with the Flyers in 2021.
Jones, meanwhile, has never held a position in an NHL front office; rather he’s spent the last 23 years as a Flyers and NHL TV analyst.
The Briere hire makes total sense for the Flyers, and is a fresh start for a struggling organization, but the Jones move is a head scratcher.
The Flyers even went as far as teeing up their front office hires with the announcement of ‘a new era of orange.’
It looks like the goal of this new era is to find ways to win under this new regime, stating the Flyers are ‘building a new foundation for the future.’
After a 31-38-13 record in 2022-23, the Flyers’ main goal remains the same as it always was, ‘win.’
