The Pittsburgh Penguins fell just short against the Detroit Red Wings in their third preseason contest.

The Pittsburgh Penguins fell just short against the Detroit Red Wings in their third preseason contest.

Following a pair of overtime games against the Columbus Blue Jackets, the Pittsburgh Penguins looked to continue their trend of solid preseason games despite not many regular NHL names in the lineup.

The Penguins, full of guys fighting for roles, traveled to take on the Detroit Red Wings suting up for the first time this preseason.

Former Red Wings netminder Alex Nedeljkovic was given the nod as the start for the Penguins and he stood on his head early.

Through the opening frame, Nedeljkovic faced 14 shots making 13 saves while the Penguins skaters in front of him only mustered four total.

One of those four shots found its way to the back of the net, however, thanks to a great passing play from Valtteri Puustinen.

The goal from Radim Zohorna opened the scoring just about six and a half minutes into the contest.

The Red Wings broke through to knot the score and the period came to an end in a 1-1 tie.

Starting the second period was a bit more of a struggle for the Penguins as they took a handful of penalties, eventually giving the Red Wings a 5-on-3 advantage.

The Red Wings took advantage of the opportunity and notched their second goal of the game.

The Penguins wouldn’t be held back for long, as Puustinen followed his awesome assist with a goal of his own to continue setting himself apart from the crowd.

Zohorna got the play started by beating former Penguins defenseman Jeff Petry in a puck battle and finding Puustinen in the open ice.

That goal just opened the back and forth as the Red Wings would answer to re-take the lead; but the Penguins would again get right back in the fight.

Sam Poulin is a key prospect looking to make a huge jump into the NHL roster and continues to make a great case for himself.

With not much room to work with, Poulin was able to sneak in a shot from a harsh angle.

Through a pair of periods, the Penguins and Red Wings remained tied, now at three a piece.

The Red Wings notched their third lead of the game when a shot deflected off of Puustinen's stick past Nedeljkovic.

With time winding down in the game, the Penguins pulled Nedeljkovic for the extra attacker.

The Penguins came up empty with the extra man, however, and they ate their first regulation loss of the preseason.

The Red Wings came out defeating the Penguins by a score of 4-3.
