Kyle Dubas recently signed a seven-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins, but has already been dubbed on the hot seat.
The puck is yet to be dropped on Kyle Dubas’ first regular season as president and general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins, but it seems the pressure is already on.
According to preseason polls from The Hockey News (THN) writing staff, the new face of the Penguins front office is already in a hot seat.
Of all the general managers in the NHL, Dubas finished fourth in voting on the topic ‘which GM is feeling the heat the most?’
The Penguins hired Dubas before the 2023 postseason wrapped up and was signed to a seven-year contract.
The ink isn’t even dry on the contract and people seem to think Dubas’ job is in jeopardy.
Considering how other polls finished, it makes sense that Dubas would land this high on the list.
THN staff voted that the Penguins will feel buyer's remorse over the Erik Karlsson trade.
Despite everyone in the Penguins organization, from the players, to coaches, to front office executives, being fully on board with Karlsson, he still strikes as one of the most divisive names in the NHL.
Add on Dubas’ reputation as a pretty divisive hockey name in his own right, and outsiders quickly lose belief.
There is no doubting the amount of pressure Dubas is under; he’s taking on a bigger role with a team at the end of the road in terms of continuous success.
Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang aren’t getting any younger and the prospect pool is nearly barren in Pittsburgh.
The Penguins believe Dubas can lead them to at least one more championship with the old guard and help usher in a new era.
People may believe Dubas’ seat is already getting warm, but he’s going to be around for a long time.
