The Pittsburgh Penguins have reported their first offseason surgery to Jan Rutta.
With the Pittsburgh Penguins’ season wrapped up, now is the time for players to take care of any nagging injuries or begin rehab processes.
The Penguins reported that defenseman Jan Rutta underwent a successful surgery for a core muscle injury.
The recovery time is expected to be 8-10 weeks and the surgery was carried out in St. Louis, Missouri.
Rutta only played in three of the final 14 games of the 2022-23 regular season.
In his first year with the Penguins, Rutta appeared in 56 games and recorded three goals and six assists for nine points.
Rutta spent most of his season on the third pairing, but due to injuries to other defenders was bumped to the first line for a period of time.
Former general manager Ron Hextall signed Rutta on the first day of free agency during the summer of 2022.
Rutta will turn 33 this summer and has a contract that runs through 2024-25 at $2.75 million per year against the salary cap.
Head coach Mike Sullivan stated at the end of the year that he wasn't sure if any players required offseason surgery.
If that holds true, Rutta should be the only surgery the Penguins see this offseason.
