Penguins Set To Become Free Agents

There are multiple Pittsburgh Penguins that will likely not return to the team.

New winger Reilly Smith checks a lot of boxes for the Pittsburgh Penguins heading into the 2023-24 season.

Free agency is finally here and while Kyle Dubas the Pittsburgh Penguins are looking around for players that can bolster their roster, they are likely losing a few key performers to the open market.

The Penguins have seven players that are set to become unrestricted free agents: Jason Zucker, Tristan Jarry, Brian Dumoulin, Nick Bonino, Danton Heinen, and Dmitry Kulikov.

Ryan Poehling joins that list after he was not given a qualifying offer as a restricted free agent.

Dubas stated that he has been in talks with every upcoming free agent, but according to Mike Rupp of the NHL Network, Zucker was not offered a contract and will hear offers from other teams.

Zucker was just about pushed out of the lineup when the Penguins acquired Reilly Smith from the Vegas Golden Knights.

Even after the trade, both Dubas and head coach Mike Sullivan stated that there was still a chance of re-signing Zucker, but that likely won’t work out.

As for Jarry, there has reportedly been a mutual interest, but as the noon deadline approaches, those chances also grow slim.

As for the rest of the list, it seemed obvious from the start of the offseason that they would not be returning to Pittsburgh.
