Report: Penguins Interested in Stan Bowman for GM Job

The Pittsburgh Penguins are reportedly one of the teams to have shown interesting in speaking with Stan Bowman.

Could Marcus Pettersson be the Pittsburgh Penguins top pair defenseman next season?

Fenway Sports Group (FSG) plans on looking far and wide for a new general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins, and as time drags on, more names appear as possible candidates.

One name that should really be avoided is Stan Bowman, but according to Elliotte Friedman, the Penguins might have shown some interest.

Of course the NHL would have to approve any sort of contact with the former Chicago Blackhawks general manager, but more than one team might have Bowman on their list.

Friedman said on the 32 Thoughts Podcast that the Penguins and Calgary Flames are among teams interested in talking with Bowman.

While not technically been ‘banned’ from working in the NHL, Bowman has been blacklisted and cannot join a team in any way without league approval.

If any team wishes to discuss working with Bowman, they would need Gary Bettman’s approval and it is believed that he has yet to give the green light.

Bowman is a name to avoid for more than just failing to report sexual assault allegations within the Blackhawks in 2010, but he also did a terrible job in his final years as GM in Chicago.

Under Bowman, the Blackhawks went from a dynasty with three Stanley Cups to a bottom feeding team with multiple bloated contracts.

It didn't help when he traded away Artemi Panarin for Brandon Saad in an attempt to get the band back together and plummeting the stock of both Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane.

It doesn’t seem likely FSG and the Penguins will target Bowman, but this also isn’t the first time the two parties have been linked.
