It was a special game after a special weekend, but the Pittsburgh Penguins couldn't find the scoresheet.
After a memorable weekend for the Pittsburgh Penguins and their captain, it was time to drop the puck against the Ottawa Senators in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
As part of the NHL’s Nova Scotia Showdown, the Penguins suited up for an exhibition game in their captain’s home province.
Both teams sported lineups featuring mostly NHL regulars adding some intensity to the intimate environment.
Despite Crosby and the Penguins garnering much of the attention, it was the Senators who got on the board first.
Senators forward Ridley Greig let rip a perfectly placed shot beating Penguins’ starting goalie Tristan Jarry.
A second goal would squeeze it’s way through Jarry to give the Senators a 2-0 lead which they would carry into the intermission.
The Penguins were behind by a pair of goals, but were dominating in shots for a majority of the period with a 14-9 lead after 20 minutes.
Neither team found twine in the second period even with a pair of power play opportunities for the Penguins.
The third period started with the Penguins getting a handful of opportunities, but Senators goalie Joonas Korpisalo came out on top each time.
Even more power play opportunities came and went for the Penguins as the units dipped to 0-6.
The Penguins pulled Jarry with about three minutes remaining in the game to try and get something going, but with no luck.
The Senators potted an empty net goal to put themselves up 3-0.
That is were the score would stand as Crosby and the Penguins get shut out in Nova Scotia.
