The Pittsburgh Penguins may lose their starting goalie to the Ottawa Senators.
With the opening of NHL free agency just a week away, it is still unclear what direction the Pittsburgh Penguins plan on going with their upcoming free agents.
New president of hockey operations Kyle Dubas has yet to sign new contracts with the Penguins upcoming unrestricted free agents, and that includes goalie Tristan Jarry.
While it’ll be interesting to see what direction Dubas takes with Jason Zucker and Brian Dumoulin, the spot light sits on Jarry this offseason.
If the Penguins decide to go in a different direction in net, Jarry would likely emerge as the top free agent goalie option in the NHL.
He battled injuries all season in 2022-23, but can still cut it at the NHL level; Daily Faceoff projects a contract with just shy of $5 million for four seasons.
If not the Penguins, however, who will sign Jarry this summer? Daily Faceoff thinks the Ottawa Senators could be a perfect fit.
Mike McKenna ran down a list of every top free agent goalie and discussed where each on fits best, and Jarry landed on the Senators.
The idea is that Jarry will sign a deal worth well above his projection of $4.8 and the Senators are willing to pay that kind of money, even if he’s a health risk at times.
Dubas will have to make a decision soon regarding the Penguins and their goaltending, but at this point it seems unlikely Jarry will return to the Penguins.
Remember when the Penguins had to decide between either Jarry or Matt Murray? Wouldn't it be poetic if both goalies ended up in Ottawa after an awkward departure from Pittsburgh?
In the same list from McKenna, he penned Joonas Korpisalo as a perfect match for the Penguins.
