Free agent options in goal are thin, but the Pittsburgh Penguins might find a diamond in the rough.

Free agent options in goal are thin, but the Pittsburgh Penguins might find a diamond in the rough.

The situation between the pipes is once again the story of the offseason for the Pittsburgh Penguins and there doesn’t seem to be a shortage of options available.

Following a tough 2022-23 season from Tristan Jarry, it seems all but certain he will not sign a new contract with the Penguins.

But who will new president of hockey operations get to replace the All-Star netminder?

Names like Connor Hellebuyck and John Gibson have been floated as trade options given a weak free agent class, but one name does stick out among the pack.

Joonas Korpisalo was acquired by the Los Angeles Kings around the trade deadline and following the move he turned into one of the hottest goalies in the NHL.

Once Korpisalo made it to LA, he put up a 7-3-1 record and a .921 save percentage in 11 games to end the regular season.

The Kings were knocked out of the postseason in the first round by Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers, but that doesn’t stop Korpisalo from being possibly the best available goalie via free agency.

According to Mike McKenna of Daily Faceoff, the Penguins would be a perfect landing spot for Korpisalo.

The Penguins won’t have an extraordinary amount of cap space to spend on a goalie, and Korpisalo isn’t due for a huge pay day.

Korpisalo is likely to sign a short-term deal to prove he has what it takes to be a regular starting goalie in the NHL.

At 29-years-old, Korpisalo has played in 221 career games and picked up 94 wins.

Some off years with the Columbus Blue Jackets sank Korpisalo’s stock, but his tenure with the Kings showed glimpses of what he can be.

Korpisalo isn’t a project goalie, but the exact kind of player Dubas usually looks for in net; not a headline name, but a dependable starter who will quietly out-duel most goalies in the NHL.

Daily Faceoff also projects that Korpisalo will land a two-year deal with $2.6 million, doubling his last contract of $1.3 million for a season.

That’s more than affordable for the Penguins and likely the perfect situation for everyone involved.

McKenna also listed the Ottawa Senators as the perfect landing spot for Jarry is he is on his way out of Pittsburgh.
