As the second day of free agency begins, the Pittsburgh Penguins have gotten right to work with a trio of signings.
It was announced that the Penguins have signed Radim Zohorna and Magnus Hellberg to one-year contracts and Marc Johnstone to a two-year deal.
Zohorna returns after a brief stint with the Calgary Flames and an even shorter run with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Since leaving Pittsburgh before last season, Zohorna has played in 10 NHL games with only a single goal on his stat line.
Most of his time away from the Penguins has been spent with the Flames and Maple Leafs’ AHL affiliates.
Hellberg joins the Penguins after president of hockey operations Kyle Dubas stated he thought the team needed another veteran goalie option for the minor league system.
Already running with a three-goalie set up at the NHL level, the Penguins now have four goalies with NHL experience in their organization.
Hellberg has played in 23 NHL games and holds a 7-8-1 record.
Johnstone joins the Penguins having no NHL experience, but has been making his way through the Maple Leafs minor league system.
Clearly this was a singing made out of familiarity with Dubas; Johnstone played for the Maple Leafs AHL and ECHL affiliates over the last couple of seasons.
