Ron Hextall didn't do a great job with the Pittsburgh Penguins, but could he find a job elsewhere?
Fenway Sports Group relieved Ron Hextall of his duties as general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins on the first day of the offseason.
The Penguins has just finished up a season that left them out of the playoffs for the first time since 2006 and it was obvious there needed to be a change in the front office.
In one quick move, Hextall, Brian Burke, and Chris Pryor were all shown the door and fired from their respective positions.
Just over a month later, the Penguins could be closing in on the end of their search for the organization’s next general manager, but they aren’t the only team on the hunt.
The Calgary Flames and Toronto Maple Leafs are searching for new general managers while Hextall’s old club, the Philadelphia Flyers just removed the interim tag from Daniel Briere.
With multiple vacancies in NHL front offices up for the grabs, does Hextall have a chance of getting back in the game this offseason?
Given the amount of names that have been reported around Pittsburgh’s openings alone, it doesn’t seem likely Hextall will become a contender anywhere.
Hextall butchered the ending to the Penguins’ 2022-23 season at the trade deadline and teams around the NHL know it.
It’s also unlikely since the Flames are likely going to promote Craig Conroy, leaving just Toronto as the last team looking to fill the role.
Don’t count him out with the Maple Leafs, however, as Hextall apparently fits what they’re looking for.
As a matter of fact, Hextall has already been mentioned on a list of names that would fit the requirements.
Brendan Shanahan made the sudden decision to not renew the contract of Kyle Dubas, leaving a spot open in the Maple Leafs’ front office.
According to Shanahan, he is looking for someone who has experience; NHL insider Chris Johnston compiled a list of who he believes could fill the role in Toronto.
Hextall was listed alongside names that have been involved in the Penguins’ search like Marc Begevin and Peter Chiarelli, but also included Ray Shero and Jim Benning.
The Maple Leafs will want to move quick in finding a replacement for Dubas, and managing in Toronto is an attractive job, but Hextall can’t be the solution.
The fact his name was even brought up as a possibility is shocking enough.
One saving grace for Hextall is that the NHL has a habit of shuffling the same group of people throughout the teams.
So one day it's possible Hextall finds his way back into a front office, but where?
Maybe the Flyers will take Hextall back but stick him lower on the totem pole.
