Not long after leaving the Pittsburgh Penguins, Casey DeSmith may be hitting the road yet again.
Much like how Jeff Petry was flipped following the three-way deal that brought Erik Karlsson to the Pittsburgh Penguins, goalie Casey DeSmith might not stay with the Montreal Canadiens for long.
Shortly after finalizing the three-way trade between the Penguins, Canadiens and San Jose Sharks, it seemed pretty clear that the Habs had no intentions of keeping their new arrivals.
Petry was shortly there after sent to the Detroit Red Wings, while DeSmith might soon become a hot commodity in the NHL trade block.
As teams across the league prepare for the 2023-24 season, a number of them might be coming to the conclusion that they are in need of a solid backup goalie who can step in as a starter if need be.
DeSmith put up solid numbers as a backup and part-time starter in his last season with the Penguins; in 38 games played he pulled in 15 wins and a .905 save percentage.
Teams like the Tampa Bay Lightning or St. Louis Blues might consider a different option for their backups as they look to contend all year.
Maybe a rebuilding team like the Chicago Blackhawks or Columbus Blue Jackets take DeSmith on in the final year of his contract?
At this moment, the Ottawa Senators only have one goalie listed on their NHL roster; a duo DeSmith and Joonas Korpisalo doesn’t sound too bad for a budding playoff team.
Canadiens’ general manager Kent Hughes told DeSmith to be patient, and that they had no intentions of burying him in the AHL.
DeSmith will have a job in the NHL once the 2023-24 season kicks off, it’s just a question of where exactly will he land?
