The Pittsburgh Penguins could look to ship out their first round pick for a new goalie.
No matter who was hired to take over the Pittsburgh Penguins front office, their first order of business was always going to be figuring out what to do with the goalie position.
Tristan Jarry struggled in the final year of his contract and doesn’t have a clear future with the Penguins.
New president of hockey operations Kyle Dubas surely has solving the goalie problem near the top of his list of priorities.
During his opening press conference, Dubas said he will look far and wide for the best possible answer in net.
Dubas said the search will start with Jarry then expand to free agency or trades if needed.
The idea of trading for a goalie has prevailed as the popular option as this year’s free agent class (especially around goalies) is fairly weak.
If a trade is in the cards for the Penguins to nab a goalie, will it involve the Penguins first-round pick?
Elliotte Friedman of the 32 Thoughts Podcast suggests that Dubas could put the 14th overall pick to find a new goalie.
Some of the top goalie rumored to be on the market include Connor Hellebuyck, John Gibson, and possibly Juuse Saros.
Each of those goalies would likely cost a first round pick plus other assets.
Friedman did follow his thought by saying he doesn’t believe Gibson is in the cards for Dubas.
The 2023 Draft is supposed to be one of the deepest drafts the sport has seen in a long time and a 14th overall pick could carry a ton of value.
The Penguins need to make a decision with their goalie, and most recent reports have indicated that Dubas has not started conversations with Jarry regarding an extension.
The Draft is just under a week away and free agency opens right after, something will have to be done quickly.
