The 2023 Training Camp is arguably one of the most competitive in recent memory for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The 2023 Training Camp is arguably one of the most competitive in recent memory for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

When Kyle Dubas took over in the front office of the Pittsburgh Penguins, it was expected that there would be a good amount of roster turnover.

Not only do the Penguins have a bunch of new faces, Dubas did a fantastic job in building a depth chart full to names that could contend for NHL roster spots.

With 2023 Training Camp well underway, the battles have begun for the various openings in the lineup.

According to head coach Mike Sullivan, this arguably the most competitive training camp he’s ever been a part of.

“From a sheer numbers standpoint,” Sullivan said. “There’s a lot of guys looking to establish themselves.”

The Penguins invited 58 players in total to training camp and will have to slim down the roster to 23 before the season kicks off.

With that many players and all different levels of skillsets, there is certainly going to be some surprises when cuts start being made.

Among those 58 players are numerous prospects and guys likely heading to the AHL, but there are also five professional tryout contracts.

Each of those signed to a PTO have their own chance to reset their careers and earn a role on the NHL roster.

Among Dubas’ slew of depth signings is forward Vinnie Hinostroza who was signed to a two-way contract.

Despite the ability to easily fly between the NHL and AHL, Hinostroza has been battling for a roster spot and skating alongside Sidney Crosby on the first line.

Hinostroza says that everyone has the same goal but only a certain few will be able to make real noise.

“Everyone wants to help this team and show what they can do.”

Among the forwards fighting for roster spots include Hinostroza, Andreas Johnsson, Sam Poulin, Colin White, Austin Wagner, and Rem Pitlick.

On defense there is a huge battle between P.O. Joseph and Ty Smith on the left side, as well as Chad Ruhwedel and Mark Pysyk on the right.

Everywhere you turn there is a roster competition to watch and it’ll be a fight to the bitter end.
