The Pittsburgh Penguins will want to see more from Jeff Carter this season, but he isn't committing to any expectations.

The 2022-23 season was far from ideal for the Pittsburgh Penguins as a whole, but the bottom-six forward group especially struggled.

For many Penguins’ fans, a lot of the blame and criticism fell on the shoulders of veteran forward Jeff Carter.

During his 18 years in the NHL, Carter has built a successful career; a pair of Stanley Cup rings, over 800 points in over 1,200 games played.

Something about the 2022-23 year, though, he just didn’t have that jump anymore.

Carter wasn’t a fit as the third line center and despite lagging offensive numbers, he was still put out for almost every game in the entire season.

Heading into the 2023-24 year, it looks as if Carter will be shifting to the wing, but will that equate to a successful final run in the NHL?

Does Carter have any expectations to improve on what he put up last year?

It’s certainly a better role for the Penguins as a whole, but Carter himself isn’t one to set goals or expectations.

“No, I don’t really do that,” Carter said. “I Never have. Just try to go in and have the best season I possibly can. Whatever that may be, it’s what it’ll be.”

At the age of 38 and about to enter his 19th season in the NHL, it won’t be easy for Carter to turn back the clock.

Carter also won’t be putting too much thought into what’s to come this season or after.

Entering the final year of his contract, Carter’s future in the NHL isn’t clear.

When asked if he’s put any thought into what’s next, Carter simply said “no.”

The expectations around the Penguins this season are high, and the fan will want to see so much more out of Carter.

Surely, he’ll try to do his best and find the proper improvements, but he isn’t setting any preseason standards.
