Penguins vs. Avalanche: Desperate Times for Pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh Penguins take on the Colorado Avalanche, desperate to snap their current losing streak.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have fallen out of playoff positioning with three weeks left in the season, but are they better off missing the postseason?

The Pittsburgh Penguins are now on the outside looking in on the playoff race in the Eastern Conference. After dropping their fourth straight contest, the Pens are desperate for a win and to make up some ground in the playoff race. They'll face a difficult test in the defending Stanley Cup champions, the Colorado Avalanche. Here's what to watch for.

    1. Crosby Goalless in Last Five Games

Despite leading the Penguins in scoring over the last five games, Sidney Crosby hasn't looked his best. He's gone five games without a goal, and even played a recent game without registering a single shot. The Penguins need their captain to do a lot of heavy lifting for their team, but they especially need him to score some goals. The team is desperate for a win, and Crosby netting a goal or two will go a long way to achieving that.

    2. Rakell Flying High

Amongst a sea of disappointment, forward Rickard Rakell is having a resurgent year for the Penguins. He currently has 25 goals and 25 assists, posting his first 50 point season since 2017-18. Bouncing between the first and second line and occupying a spot on the first power play unit, Rakell has stood out all season wherever he plays. He scored the team's only goal in their most recent loss to the Ottawa Senators, and the Penguins will be looking for more offense against the Avalanche.

    3. Penguins Dominating Central Division

The Penguins have had a tough time against their own division, posting a losing record versus Metropolitan division opponents for the first time in years. Conversely, the Penguins are having a dominant year against the Western Conference, specifically the Central Division. The Pens have won 10 of 11 games playing against this division, and are outscoring their opponents by a score of 41-21. The Pens need to continue that magic against the Avalanche, and find a way to win their 11th game against Central Division teams this season.
