Erik Karlsson joins the Pittsburgh Penguins after one of the best seasons seen by an NHL defenseman.

Erik Karlsson joins the Pittsburgh Penguins after one of the best seasons seen by an NHL defenseman.

There is no doubt that the Pittsburgh Penguins acquired one of the best players in the league by snagging Erik Karlsson from the San Jose Sharks, but he wasn’t always this touted.

The new Penguins’ blue liner is entering this season looking to continue his offensive prowess that notched him 101 points in the 2022-23 season.

Those kind of numbers from a defenseman is astounding, and rightfully placed Karlsson well within the top 30 players in the NHL according to TSN.

In their recent rankings of the top 50 players in the NHL, TSN gave Karlsson the No. 21 spot, after not even seeing the list heading into last season.

That kind of jump is massive and goes to show the kind of season Karlsson put together.

In the 2021-22 season, Karlsson played in just 50 games and recorded 35 total points (10G-25A).

Consider Karlsson’s $11.5 million a year contract and the pedigree he has carried since his days with the Ottawa Senators, 50 points wasn’t anywhere near where he should be.

Trade rumors started heading into the 2022-23 season and Karlsson found a rebirth in ability.

More than just a rebirth, Karlsson couldn’t be stopped and more than double his numbers with 101 points in 2022-23.

It’s extremely unlikely Karlsson touches 100 points again with the Penguins, but he will be an offensive threat every time he is on the ice and among the most improved players in the entire league.
