When constructing their roster, it wouldn't be surpassing to see a big name on the Pittsburgh Penguins get sent to the minors.

Before you know it, the 2023-24 NHL season will be here and the Pittsburgh Penguins will be back in action looking to reclaim a spot in the playoffs.

Before the fight for the postseason can start, however, the Penguins have to set their roster and flesh out who will play on an every day basis.

New president and general manager Kyle Dubas did a ton of work to retool the bottom six forwards and has given numerous options to head coach Mike Sullivan.

Since arriving in Pittsburgh, Dubas has brought on veteran forwards who can fill depth roles as well as professional tryouts that can legitimately fight for roster spots.

Considering there are upwards of 15 names that could easily slot into the Penguins roster, it won’t be easy picking just six.

Considering how large the competition will be and mapping out certain lineups, the Penguins are still just a touch over the salary cap limit.

An easy way to get under the cap ceiling is to send a reputable name to the AHL, and Dubas has already said he won’t be afraid to utilize the waiver wire if he needs to.

While everyone has a legit chance to crack the roster and play every day at the NHL level, no one is safe from the axe.

The Penguins have plenty of options to build their roster but still have to find a way under the cap.

It wouldn't be surprising to see a big or new name to the Penguins organization get dropped to the AHL.
