The Pittsburgh Penguins reportedly gave Kyle Dubas a groundbreaking contract to become their new President of Hockey Operations.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are a hot topic this offseason with the addition of Kyle Dubas to the front office. Bringing in someone the likes of Dubas does that for an organization.

Continuing the run of media attention, the most recent episode of the 32 Thoughts Podcast provided some more depth to just how much the Penguins' ownership group believes in their new top executive.

Speaking on the podcast, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman shared some information he heard about the contract Dubas signed. The Penguins and Dubas agreed on a contract to make him the new president of hockey operations of the Pittsburgh Penguins on June 1, 2023. Though the exact contract details have not been disclosed, it's been reported that the contract is a seven year deal and some have suggested the annual salary could be as high as $7 million. Whatever the truth of the matter is, Friedman and co-host Jeff Marek agreed that this contract is the new trend setter amongst NHL executives.

Friedman compared it to when former Toronto and Detroit head coach Mike Babcock publicly shared the details of his eight year contract with the Maple Leafs. The result was a general bump in pay for NHL head coaches, and many attribute Babcock's transparency for facilitating that increase.

The largest contract recently given out to an executive was when Edmonton hired Ken Holland as their general manager. The deal was a record breaker at the time of signing, as the Oilers gave Holland a five year, $25 million contract. The annual salary of $5 million was the highest (of publicly shared organizations) of all NHL gm's. That is until this new Dubas deal was signed.

Whatever the monetary amount Dubas agreed to, it's clear that the contract matches the monumental amount of trust and work ahead of him and his staff. The Penguins are a team in need of quality leadership as changes will continue to come, and Fenway Sports Group has made an incredibly bold commitment to Kyle Dubas as the person to see it through.
