There are three known names that still stand in the Pittsburgh Penguins search for a new hockey operations staff.
With each passing day, it seems like the Pittsburgh Penguins grow closer to finally making hires for their new front office staff.
The Penguins cast their wide net and over the last six weeks have crossed names off the list and are likely down to their final couple of candidates.
Initial reports of the general manager search featured as many as 20 names from all levels of the hockey world.
As the final few days of May approach, however, that list has shrunk to possibly three candidates.
Those candidates that remain in the hunt are the leader of the pack in Kyle Dubas, followed by Mathieu Darche, and Steve Greeley.
There doesn’t seem to be a wrong answer for the Penguins if these are the three names left in the running.
Dubas is the top dog and the job seems to be his to lose at this point; after the Penguins were granted permission to speak with the former Toronto Maple Leafs GM, he paid a visit to Sidney Crosby at the Penguins practice facility.
Darche is currently the assistant general manager/president of hockey operations for the Tampa Bay Lightning, and has seen a bit of success since taking that position.
After being hired in 2019, the Lightning have reached the Stanley Cup Final three times winning in back-to-back years in 2020 and 2021.
Greeley has been a forgotten face in a lot of the Penguins’ front office discussions, but he is the current director of hockey strategy/scouting and development with the Dallas Stars.
The Stars may not have seen the kind of success the Lightning have, but they’ve been a competitive team to reach the Cup Final in 2020 and the Western Conference Final this year.
Greeley also has an upper-hand by being a native of Massachusetts and a former coach at Boston University.
Fenway Sports Group and Mike Sullivan are sure to like that kind of background.
Fan favorite Eric Tulsky was taken out of the running earlier in the week, as were Jason Botterill and John Chayka.
