Top Penguins Prospect Could Earn NHL Roster Spot

Don't be surprised if Sam Poulin plays well enough to earn a spot on the Pittsburgh Penguins roster.

The Pittsburgh Penguins will get a lot out of Erik Karlsson, but will it be a season of setbacks?

Putting together a starting lineup for the Pittsburgh Penguins won’t be an easy task for head coach Mike Sullivan this season

New president and general manager Kyle Dubas has done his part to not only overhaul the Penguins bottom six, but also give Sullivan a multitude of options in putting together a full roster.

There is one new name, not new to the organization, who has a legitimate chance at cracking the roster and being an everyday NHL player.

After taking time off last season to focus on his mental health, Sam Poulin has returned and looks more poised than ever to earn a role on the roster.

Prospects from all over the Penguins organization teamed up to take part in the annual Prospects Challenge and Poulin was arguably the most impressive player in black and gold.

At 22-years-old, Poulin might be on the older end of the spectrum, but he found his legs quickly, and became a force in all facets.

Poulin centered the first line and was noticeable at even strength and on the power play; even more notworthy, however, was Poulin’s usage on the penalty kill.

Even with time winding down on the tournament as a whole, Poulin was still out there giving up his body to block shots and remain involved defensively, even without a stick.

Poulin is showing that he is willing to play hard on both sides of the puck and that is huge in the eyes of the Penguins organization.

The last time the Penguins had a prospect of similar stature to Poulin was Daniel Sprong, and he never found his footing in the system thanks in part due to his lack of defensive awareness.

The Penguins have pushed hard for Poulin to improve his defensive game while slowly progressing offensively.

With training camp right around the corner, it seems like Poulin’s hard work is paying off.

There might be a surplus of names fighting for depth roles on the Penguins’ roster, but Poulin will be right in the muck of the battle.
