Ex-Penguins defenseman gets six-year extension with new team less than a week after getting dealt
It seems a former Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman is settling into his new home for good.
Defenseman Marcus Pettersson - who was traded to the Vancouver Canucks on Friday, along with forward Drew O'Connor, by the Penguins for a package involving a first-round pick - signed a six-year, $33 million extension with the Canucks on Wednesday.
The Penguins opted to trade Pettersson, 28, who was set to be an unrestricted free agent in 2025, in order to receive optimal assets in return. The 6-foot-5, 175-lb. defenseman has solidified himself as a reliable top-four shutdown option over the past several seasons, even showcasing some offensive ability as well.
The left-side defenseman figures to slot on a second pairing with Tyler Myers in Vancouver, while Quinn Hughes will occupy the left side on the top pairing.
Pettersson has 17 goals and 151 points in 493 NHL games up to this point.
