Just days after acquiring Marcus Pettersson from the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Vancouver Canucks have signed the 28-year-old to a six-year, $33 million contract extension. The new contract will start next season and carries a cap hit of $5.5 million until 2031. The extension also comes with a no-movement clause until 2028, when it changes into a 15-team no-trade clause for the remainder of the contract.

REPORT: Canucks Defenceman Made Available For Trade
In the press release, GM Patrik Allvin wrote, "In just a couple of games, Marcus has already shown us the type of leadership, poise and character that we want in a top four defenceman. He has a calming influence on the ice, uses his long reach and hockey smarts to break up plays and has a good first pass to help us create more offensively. We are extremely happy to get this deal done and look forward to working with him in both the short term and long term."
Pettersson has had a strong start to his Canucks career. In two games, the 6'5" defenceman has three hits and three blocks while averaging 24:30 of ice time. Pettersson has also seen time on the penalty kill and has recorded three shots on net.
With the signing, Vancouver now has ten players on its NHL roster locked up until the end of the 2026-27 season. Some notable names include Elias Pettersson, Quinn Hughes, Filip Hronek, and Jake DeBrusk. As of February 5, Pettersson will be tied with DeBrusk for the fourth-highest cap hit on the team, with only the other Pettersson, Hughes, and Hronek carrying a higher cap hit.
