Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby is on the cusp of NHL history (again). With 87 points in 77 games, he's just three points shy of 90 for the season, possibly three consecutive seasons of reaching the plateau.

Considering that he's averaging 1.12 points per game, Crosby has a good chance of becoming only the sixth NHL player aged 37 or older to score 90 points in a single season.

The list of players to achieve the feat includes five Hall of Famers:

- Gordie Howe (40) 103 points in 1968-69

- Joe Sakic (37) 100 points in 2006-07

- Johnny Bucyk (37) 93 points in 1972-73

- Mario Lemieux (37) 91 points in 2002-03

- Wayne Gretzky (37) 90 points in 1997-98

Just like Alex Ovechkin has recently found the next level of his game to break Gretzky's goal record, Crosby continues to defy the odds in 2024-25 despite the Penguins' place in the standings.

If Crosby can collect three points over the season's final three games, he'll become only the second player aged 35 or older to record three 90-point seasons, joining Gretzky, who compiled 102, 97, and 90-point campaigns from ages 35-37.

After 93 points in 2022-23 and 94 points in 2023-24, Crosby ranks fourth all-time with 274 points for a player aged 35-37 behind Bucyk (292), Gretzky (289), and Jean Ratelle (283).
