The Pittsburgh Penguins power play needs a ton of work, but their even strength numbers are tops in the NHL.

The Pittsburgh Penguins haven’t had the most threatening start to the 2023-24 season sitting with a 9-9-0 record and multiple points out of a playoff spots on Thanksgiving.

Despite the mediocre record, the Penguins are one again being led by their top captain and his sidekick.

As the power play undergoes a complete overhaul, Sidney Crosby and Jake Guentzel are tops in the NHL in 5-on-5 scoring.

At even strength, Crosby has a league leading 19 points and Guentzel is just behind him with 18.

Of Crosby’s 19 points even strength points, 10 of them are goals, just one behind Winnipeg Jets’ Kyle Conner who leads the league.

Guentzel has taken a different rout to find his production in 2023-24, as he leads the Penguins in assists with 15, 12 of which have come at even strength.

The Penguins power play has been next to useless over the last few games, forcing head coach Mike Sullivan to completely hit the shuffle button on their positions.

Crosby and Guentzel still share a line on the power play, but one can only imagine what their overall numbers would look like with a working power play.

On the year, Crosby has a total of 12 goals and 10 assists for a team leading 22 poitns.

Guentzel has tallied six goals to his 15 helpers for 21 total points.

The Penguins are a solid 5-on-5 team, and their top line expresses that power each game.

their linemate, Bryan Rust, sits just behind Crosby on the 5-on-5 goals list with nine.
