Kris Letang was a true leader both on and off the ice for the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2022-23 despite much adversity.

At the 2023 NHL Awards, Kris Letang became the third player in Pittsburgh Penguins history to win the Bill Masterton Trophy.

Despite suffering the second stroke of his playing career, dealing with a lengthy lower-body injury, and the loss of his father, Letang led the Penguins on the blue line and was well deserving of the Masterton.

Each season, the Masterton is given to the player who shows perseverance and dedication to the game of hockey.

Letang did just that with his tough season while still appearing in 64 games during the 2022-23 season and leading Penguins defenders in points with 41 (12G-29A).

During his acceptance speech, Letang said he always dreamed about being on stage at the NHL Awards, but he was never holding the Masterton.

Regardless, Letang is proud of his season and his accomplishment and says the award is special for his family.

“It’s an award you’re not able to get without if you don’t have the people around you,” Letang said. “Starting with my wife, family, friends. Obviously a great group of teammates.”

Letang said it was a special night for all of them because they all played a hand in getting Letang back on the ice after so many setbacks.

The Penguins’ team was by Letang’s side from day one; when Letang’s father passed away, the entire team flew to Montreal to be there during the funeral.

“What hey did for me in Montreal… being there for me and my family triggered something in me,” Letang said. “My wife said you should go back to the rink. Try to get back on track. The guys will be there for you.”

Teammate and fellow French Canadian P.O. Joseph lived with Letang this past season and was on stage to help present the Masterton to Letang.

Joseph spoke about living with Letang and how even through the adversity, Letang showed up to the rink in good spirits ready to lead the team both on and off the ice.

The Masterton was a well deserved honor for Letang after an unbelievably difficult 2022-23 season.
