The Pittsburgh Penguins still have faith Tristan Jarry can find footing and remain a steady goalie.
When Kyle Dubas and the Pittsburgh Penguins decided to give goaltender Tristan Jarry and five-year contract worth over $5 million, it was widely regarded as a huge risk.
There is no doubt the skill can be there for Jarry, but through his three full seasons as the top goalie for the Penguins, he’s had huge bouts of inconsistency.
Injuries have played a role in those struggles, but that was part of the risk; this time around, there doesn’t seem to be an injury.
Jarry missed a game with an upper-body injury, but that’s been it health wise.
As for the overall game, Jarry’s inconsistencies have already played a role in the 2023-24 season.
In 12 games played, Jarry has a 6-6-0 record with a .910 save percentage, 2.56 goals against average, and a league leading three shutouts.
Overall that doesn’t seem terrible, but almost all of those losses have been ugly performances.
In Jarry’s six wins, he has a .968 save percentage; in his losses, however, he has a .846 which is unplayable.
The inconsistencies are rearing their ugly head, yet again, but the most recent loss to the Devils can’t be completely pinned on the netminder.
Everyone in the locker room agreed the team as a whole just wasn’t good enough, and head coach Mike Sullivan placed just about none of the blame on Jarry alone.
“I think he’s been pretty solid,” Sullivan said. “I don’t know that we can look at Tristan for this one.”
Jarry and the Penguins both saw winning streak snap against the Devils who walked away with the 5-2 victory.
Before the start of the California road trip, Jarry took responsibility and said he needed to be better, and for his next four games, he was.
The Devils just got the better of him and the Penguins as a whole.
As of right now, Sullivan and the Penguins aren’t worried about Jarry’s consistency issues, but it’ll be something to keep an eye on with multiple huge games still right around the corner.
