With six power play goals in four games, it's safe to say the Pittsburgh Penguins have figured something out.

With six power play goals in four games, it's safe to say the Pittsburgh Penguins have figured something out.

The Pittsburgh Penguins continue to hover around the .500 mark with each passing game, and a lot of that is due to the massive struggles on the power play.

More often than not for an entire month, the Penguins were at a real disadvantage despite technically being on the man advantage.

Players were swapped on and off the units and the coaching staff was trying everything they could to find some sort of success.

Noel Acciari isn’t a power play specialist but did plenty of defending against those units in practices and noted that the group was just ‘one shot away from catching fire.’

On December 12, against the Arizona Coyotes, the Penguins broke through for a power play goal.

Ever since that moment in the opening two minutes against the Coyotes, the Penguins power play has been on a roll.

The power play has been the center of attention, and for good reason, and it seems like things might be starting to turn the corner; they’ve picked up six power play goals over the last four games, that’s the most in the NHL in that span.

Captain Sidney Crosby acknowledged the power play struggles and how it’s been the center of attention for a little while.

"It’s something we’ve been working on and it’s been a focal point here for a while,” Crosby said. “To see it be a difference maker, and be the difference tonight... special teams are always big, but hopefully it’s a big confidence boost the way it’s been going for us."

Crosby has been a key contributor for the power play’s resurgence notching a pair of goals and three assists since breaking the drought.

Jake Guentzel has also been a lynchpin scoring three of the six goals.

The Penguins power play bottomed out at just over 9% on the season, with six goals over four games, they’ve improved to 14.4% with a total of 13 goals on 90 attempts.

The numbers still aren’t exactly where they should, or where they were expected to be considering the personnel, but huge strides are being taken in the right direction.

Maybe Acciari was right, they just needed that one shot.
