The Pittsburgh Penguins might strike gold by taking a look at the Calgary Flames.

The 2023 NHL Draft is here and the Pittsburgh Penguins still maintain their first-round pick, but will they still hold it and take a prospect?

With speculation around how deep this draft could be, the 14th overall pick could be valuable to a team aside from the Penguins.

Kyle Dubas said he would like to keep the pick, but also mentioned that he is willing to make a deal with a team who might be in a bit of a cap crunch.

The Penguins have over $20 million in space to spend and could deal their first-round pick for an NHL-ready player.

The Calgary Flames might be the gold mine the Penguins are looking for; the Flames are looking to move multiple assets, and have already started shedding players.

Tyler Toffoli was dealt by the Flames and he could have been a solid target for the Penguins; but Calary has other faces on their blue line specifically that the Penguins could take a run at.

The Penguins have been picked as a possible landing spot for defenseman Noah Hanifin who would bring an immediate boost to the defensive group.

Hanifin offers a puck moving ability the Penguins could use in the final days of Kris Letang’s career.

Nikita Zadorov has been floated around as a possible casualty from the Flames and he could bring a different element to Pittsburgh.

At 6-foot-6, Zadorov doesn’t bring much offense but he uses his size in ways Penguins’ blue liners haven’t done in recent years.

With 175 hits in the 2022-23 season, Zadorov brings a snarl that the Penguins thought they would get from Jeff Petry.

Dubas stated that he wants to build out the depth of the Penguins and will likely put focus on the forward group, but the defense needs to see just as many changes.

Aside from Letang and maybe Marcus Pettersson, there’s no one no the Penguins’ blue line that can really ‘wow’ you.

Hanifin and Zadorov would bring the wow-factor.
