Nothing should be off the table when it comes to making changes on the Pittsburgh Penguins power play.
As the 2023-24 season reached the quarter mark, one of the biggest issues still surrounding the Pittsburgh Penguins is their lack of success on the power play.
Rocking a 12.5% success rate, the Penguins are one of the least productive teams on the man advantage throughout the entire NHL.
Seven goals on 56 attempts spots them 26th in the league and eight percentage points behind the league average.
Mike Sullivan and Todd Reirden have tried a few different combinations of players, but the time for small changes is far in the past.
At this point, with the lack of production, it’s time to just hit the reset button and start experimenting with everything possible.
Whether it be personnel, structure, or both, the Penguins need to dig deep and start throwing everything they can against a wall and seeing what sticks.
The Penguins started training camp with Erik Karlsson and Kris Letang on the same blue line, maybe it’s time to give that a go again?
Why not take a look at a different zone entry system since they looked genuinely nervous at times against the Toronto Maple Leafs?
No options should be left off the table here.
The Penguins ran plenty of power play drills at their most recent practice, but not too much different in terms of experimentation.
Those who are on those units feel like they’re close to breaking through, and once they do, there’s a real chance they can be one of the most dominating forces in the league.
