The Pittsburgh Penguins will see great things from Erik Karlsson, but 100 points might be too much to ask for.
It wasn’t easy for Kyle Dubas and the Pittsburgh Penguins to land Erik Karlsson from San Jose Sharks, but there will be plenty of pressure for the future Hall of Fame defender to live up to.
The Penguins’ newest defenseman is coming off of a record setting season where he became just the sixth blue liner in NHL history to hit 100 points.
When the numbers are that slim, it’s all but expected that the marker won’t get hit again, but does Karlsson have a chance to ever hit that mark again?
Given the rarity of the accomplishment, and that Karlsson is likely past the prime years of his career, it seems unlikely.
At the age of 33 and a lengthy history of injuries, it’s a longshot that the Penguins see Karlsson eclipse such a milestone again.
It’s not like he won’t get close, though, as at least for the upcoming 2023-24 season, the Penguins are hungrier than ever to win.
After missing the postseason in 2023, the core of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang want one last run at hockey’s ultimate prize.
The pressure will be on Karlsson to help, and if the chemistry clicks right away, there’s no reason why he could push upwards of 75-80 points.
Karlsson is going to be a massive help as the top power play unit’s quarterback and his playmaking abilities should help increase offense for everyone around him.
Crosby and Malkin should see an increase in both even strength and power play production with Karlsson on the blue line.
Letang might see fewer minutes, but that will only help his stamina as he continues to age past 35.
There is no doubt that Karlsson will bring loads of offensive production to the Penguins and 101 points on a struggling Sharks team was mind blowing.
Even in a much better Penguins lineup, however, it’s unlikely to happen again for Karlsson.
