The Pittsburgh Penguins continue to struggle on the second day of the work week.
We are running out of ways to describe the 2022-23 Pittsburgh Penguins. Many are dumbfounded by this team's rollercoaster season and their ability to look like a completely different team from period to period.
A recent trend that has plagued the Penguins is their continued lack of effort on Tuesday night games. Since March 1st, the Penguins are 1-4-0 on Tuesdays, including losses to the Montreal Canadiens, Detroit Red Wings, and most recently, the Chicago Blackhawks.
Their only victory in that span was against the last-place Columbus Blue Jackets, but even in that game, the Penguins came out flat and had to rally from a 4-0 deficit halfway through the game.
There's no logical reason this team continues to no show on Tuesday games, especially against some of the lowest-ranked teams in the NHL. It was a trend that likely would've been ignored if not for the latest loss, potentially ending any hope of a playoff berth.
As they entered the third period trailing the Blackhawks 1-0, the Penguins lacked a sense of urgency. Their power play managed to tie the game up on their fourth opportunity of the night, but poor goaltending by Tristan Jarry and a continued lack of urgency finished off the Penguins night.
The Penguins postseason fate now rests in the hands of the Montreal Canadiens, who face off against the New York Islanders on Wednesday night. Anything other than a Canadiens regulation win will finish a disappointing season in Pittsburgh.
