Carl Hagelin Had Underrated Impact on Penguins’ Cup Runs

Carl Hagelin finishes his career as the unsung hero of the Pittsburgh Penguins Stanley Cup runs.

Pittsburgh Penguins winger Bryan Rust should bounce back from his down season.

Former Pittsburgh Penguins winger and two-time Stanley Cup Champion Carl Hagelin has retired from the NHL due to an eye injury that prevented him from playing for the Washington Capitals last season.

Hagelin finishes his career having played for five franchises, becoming a household name with the New York Rangers during the early 2010s and even eliminating the Penguins from the 2015 playoffs with an overtime goal.

The following postseason, Hagelin went from being a Penguins tormentor to living in Penguins history as a member of the famed "HBK" line with linemates Nick Bonino and Phil Kessel.

Hagelin is often the forgotten member of that line due to Kessel's Conn Smythe Trophy-worthy performance and Bonino's historic goal against the Capitals. However, Hagelin quietly put up career numbers that postseason, finishing fifth on the Penguins with 16 points (6G - 10A).

The 35-year-old Swede suited up in 243 games with the Penguins, scoring 104 points (37G - 67A) and playing an integral role on the team's penalty kill unit.

Carl Hagelin finishes his career as one of the most reliable depth forwards of the salary cap era.
