We have reached the 82nd game of the season, and there isn't much left for the Pittsburgh Penguins to play for. The New York Islanders defeated the Montreal Canadiens 4-2 last night, ending the Penguins 16-year playoff streak and rendering tonight's game in Columbus meaningless.
The Penguins will have plenty of decisions to make throughout the organization, and some players skating tonight will likely be playing their final game in a Penguins uniform.
Dmitry Kulikov's time in Pittsburgh was brief, but injuries shortened the trade deadline acquisitions' time to make an impression with the Penguins. Kulikov enters the offseason as an unrestricted free agent, and with seven other defensemen under contract, Kulikov will likely be looking for his next home.
Another player who could be on his way out the door is Danton Heinen. Heinen's second season with the Penguins has fallen short of expectations. He struggled to stay in the lineup despite the Penguins lackluster options for the bottom six. Heinen reportedly took a pay cut to return to Pittsburgh, but unfortunately, his gamble didn't pay off.
Tristan Jarry's future remains uncertain as the 26-year-old goaltender will become an unrestricted free agent this summer. With a chronic hip injury costing him over six weeks in a contract year, the Penguins could seek a different route in net next season.
There will be a lot of questions to answer this summer for the Penguins, but they still have one game left to play to close the book on this season.
