The Pittsburgh Penguins moved most of their negative assets over the summer.
Pittsburgh Penguins president of hockey operations and general manager Kyle Dubas has been busy during his first three months on the job. He has made numerous changes to the NHL and AHL roster and behind the scenes in the hockey operations department.
What remains is a Penguins team full of new faces and the feel of a fresh start for the organization. Along with that is the most barren trade block the organization has had entering a season in over five years.
Dubas cleared out the majority of negative assets that prevented the Penguins from making the postseason earlier this year. Brian Dumoulin had shown signs of slowing down and signed with the Seattle Kraken in free agency.
Meanwhile, Dubas rid the Penguins of four troubling contracts in the trade that brought Erik Karlsson to Pittsburgh. Mikael Granlund and Jan Rutta were sent to the San Jose Sharks, while Casey DeSmith and Jeff Petry landed with the Montreal Canadiens.
The Penguins head into training camp with a refreshing sense of optimism. While trade blocks often change early in the season, the Penguins enter the year without a pressing need to shed anyone currently moveable on their roster.
