The critics say the Pittsburgh Penguins are cooked but Kyle Dubas still has belief in his new organization.
When Kyle Dubas accepted the job as president of hockey operations for the Pittsburgh Penguins, doubters were quick to point out the team’s closing window of opportunity.
The chances that the Penguins can contend for a Stanley Cup continue to slip with each passing season, but Dubas believes there is still something special in Pittsburgh.
Dubas actually took a pretty direct shot at those doubters when he gave his thoughts on the team’s chances.
“I heard a lot of people that were highly skeptical of the team’s ability to contend,” Dubas said. “The way I view it is if people want to be against Mike Sullivan, Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, and others, they can go ahead and do so. But, I’m going to bet on them.”
In 2022-23, despite their advancing ages, the core of Crosby, Malkin, and Letang played some of the best hockey of their careers.
One of the biggest downfalls was former GM Ron Hextall’s inability to construct a winning team around them.
Dubas is stepping up to the plate and won’t have an easy job, but is already a breath of fresh air for the organization.
It’s clear that Dubas has a plan for the Penguins and an ideal path to take them a winner once again.
“I do think that it’s a group capable of contending to win a championship,” Dubas said. “I do think that we need to build out the depth of the group and supplement the greatest that those people bring.”
Dubas is getting to work right away on constructing a roster that can not only add a step of speed, but reignite a flame in the Penguins to once again compete for the Stanley Cup.
