With games counting down, the Pittsburgh Penguins need to find their consistency.
The Pittsburgh Penguins have been a volatile team all season long, but the inconsistencies have really been showing their faces since the start of March.
During the most important time of the season, the Penguins have struggled to string together wins with regularity.
With only three games left in the regular season, and an extremely tight playoff race, the way they played against the Minnesota Wild is exactly how they want to look for the rest of the year.
“I thought we did a much better job playing a calculated game,” head coach Mike Sullivan said. “That’s the game we need to emulate night-in and night-out.”
The Penguins stood tall through most of their contest with the Wild; sure, they allowed a 5-on-3 goal, but Tristan Jarry found some footing in helping the team win.
Jarry made 27 stops on 28 shots and out-battled Marc-Andre Fleury who had a number of outstanding saves.
“We got to keep it going,” Jarry said. “We’re still chasing teams. We’ve got to bring it every game. Obviously every two points helps.”
If the Penguins want to reach the postseason, they will need to win more games than either the New York Islanders or Florida Panthers, both of whom won last night, as well.
They don’t have full control over getting themselves into the postseason and will need help from outside teams, but the Penguins need all the wins they can get.
“We know if we keep winning, we’ll give ourselves the best chance to make the playoffs,” Brian Dumoulin said. “Continue with these efforts and build off of this one.”
What made the Penguins play so well against the Wild was the amount of desperation they played with.
They know the position they’re in and they need to keep playing like their life depends on it, because it pretty much does.
One loss could cost the Penguins the entire season.
