Kyle Dubas' best move this offseason for the Pittsburgh Penguins may be the one nobody is talking about.

Kyle Dubas' best move this offseason for the Pittsburgh Penguins may be the one nobody is talking about.

Kyle Dubas did his best to start fresh with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He brought in plenty of new faces, both on the ice and in the front office, and overhauled two of the Penguins' biggest areas of concern on the defense and bottom six.

Dubas' detractors will point to the Penguins' lack of scoring depth behind their talented top lines. However, one player could change the outlook on the Penguins' bottom six with a resurgence in 2023.

The Penguins signed Andreas Johnsson on July 7th to a one-year, $800k contract. The 28-year-old Swede joins the list of over a half dozen forwards that will vie for one of the few forward spots available during Penguins training camp.

Johnsson has struggled the past few seasons after being traded to the New Jersey Devils in 2020. Before that, he was a solid middle-six contributor for the Toronto Maple Leafs and would routinely move up and down their stacked forward lineup.

He accumulated 30 goals and 67 points in 125 games with the Leafs between 2017 and 2020. At 5'10", 195 lbs. Johnsson fits the mold of someone like Conor Sheary, who succeeded in Pittsburgh early in head coach Mike Sullivan's tenure.

Johnsson's speed and ability to play anywhere in the lineup make him a decent addition to the roster. But if he can recapture the scoring ability he had in his early days in Toronto, the Penguins may have their secret weapon.
