Kevin Labanc is scratched in tonight's season opener, but could this be the beginning of the end of his time with The San Jose Sharks?
Kevin Labanc is a healthy scratch for tonight's San Jose Sharks season opener against the Vegas Golden Knights.
Labanc missed some time during training camp due to an injury, and head coach David Quinn said it put him behind in getting ready for game one.
The Brooklyn native enters the final year of his 4-year $18.9 million contract. His contract situation has been controversial since he signed it in 2020. In 2019, he took a $1 million deal to bet on himself that he could be even better.
Labanc finished the 19-20 season with 33 points (14 goals, 19 assists) in 70 games, a far cry from where he finished the 2018-19 season with 17 goals and 39 assists in 82 games.
"We feel this is our best lineup," Quinn said about scratching Labanc tonight.
As for what Labanc needs to do to get in the lineup:
"It didn't help that he missed about ten days. So you get a little bit behind the eight ball," Quinn explained. "He and I had a good conversation today. He knows what he needs to do. Just continue to play at a little bit higher pace. A little bit more edge. A little bit more well-rounded game."
Since signing the four-year deal, Labanc hasn't produced and has been the subject of many trade rumors. His $4.725 million cap hit could be the main reason why he hasn't been traded.
Labanc has not scored more than 33 points since that 18-19 season. His poor production and lack of defensive ability make his cap hit overpriced.
With free agency staring the winger in the face, starting the season as a healthy scratch could be seen as the beginning of the end for Kevin Labanc and the San Jose Sharks.
