The San Jose Sharks welcome back Logan Couture to the lineup tonight and have William Eklund on the same line.
Couture skated on a line with Alexander Barabanov and Fabian Zetterlund at practice yesterday, but head coach David Quinn told reporters that he has Eklund in Zetterlund's spot for tonight's game against the Anaheim Ducks.
"He's still learning, but I think he's got a pretty good balance because he's done other things pretty well," Quinn said yesterday about Eklund not letting failures affect his development. "He's done some good things away from the puck. I think [with] his offensive approach, he's been frustrating himself. That's the area that I think he's gotten in the way of himself."
At 21 years old, Eklund is still finding his way in the NHL. Every young star needs to learn not to let one loss get in the way of moving forward. That part of development is just as important as the on-ice part.
"You can't let it get in the way of the next game or the next practice or not getting in the way of moving forward," Quinn said.
Eklund hasn't scored a goal since December 12 against the Winnipeg Jets.
As Quinn said, he's doing good things away from the puck, but he needs to simplify his offense and get back to firing pucks.
Playing with Logan Couture should provide a fresh change for Eklund. Couture will be able to handle more defensive aspects of the game and give Eklund an offensive zone net-front presence.
"I score a lot of my goals around the net," Couture told THN yesterday. " We'll see how tomorrow night goes. Obviously, it's been a while since I played, so I'm going to try my best to get up to speed pretty quickly."
Sharks defenseman Henry Thrun talked about the mental aspect of going game to game in the NHL.
"It's hard. You have to learn to take care of your body and learn to recover and learn how to mentally reset for each game," Thrun told THN. "If there's a period or a game you don't like, you have to find a way to get back to the game that you have that can help the team in a short amount of time."
Eklund has been playing with Tomas Hertl for most of the season, and while that combination has been successful, it seemingly has gone stale.
The Sharks take on the Anaheim Ducks tonight at 7 p.m. It will be interesting to see what kind of chemistry Couture and Eklund can build.
