From Arizona State to the NHL, Kraken Goalie Making is Making His Mark
Seattle Kraken goaltender Joey Daccord has begun to make an impact at the NHL level.
Daccord is the first player to make the NHL out of Arizona State's NCAA hockey program. The Ottawa Senators took Daccord No. 199 in 2015.
During his junior season in 2018-19 at ASU, Daccord finished the season with a 21-13-1 record, a .926 save percentage, and 2.35 goals-against average. He finished tied for the most shutouts (7), and all four stats set program records for a Sun Devil goaltender in a season.
He recently visited with his old program and gave this year's team a speech in the locker room.
Daccord made his NHL debut during the 2018-19 season and was selected by the Kraken in the expansion draft in 2021.
Last season, Daccord helped the AHL's Coachella Valley Firebirds to a Calder Cup Final appearance but lost in seven games. This season, Daccord assumed an NHL role as Philipp Grubauer's backup.
Daccord will start against the San Jose Sharks tonight, marking his 11th game this season. So far, the netminder has a .901 save% and 2.98 GAA. While the save % isn't off the charts, his 2.98 GAA is down from his career 3.40 GAA.
Grubauer has played 12 games and will not dress for tonight's game due to injury. This might be Daccord's best opportunity to become a starting NHL goalie.
Sharks head coach David Quinn coached in the NCAA and had this to say about Daccord:
"I've known Joey from afar for a long time, and I know his Dad," Quinn said. "It's nice to see a kid like that who has been through a lot, who's paid his dues and taken a different path maybe than everybody else [by not going] out east to get to where he wanted to be and play in the National Hockey League."

Macklin Celebrini is this season's projected No. 1 overall pick and plays in the NCAA at Boston University. The Sharks No. 4 pick last season was Will Smith, another product of the NCAA at Boston College.
"I think it speaks volumes to the level of play and the quality of play [in] college hockey," Quinn said. "You're going to see more and more players continue to make an impact at the National Hockey League level."
Daccord won't be the last player to make it from ASU Hockey to the NHL, but he will always be remembered as the first.
