San Jose Sharks group ticket sales representative Gunnar Holmberg was ranked as a better QB than the San Francisco 49ers' Brock Purdy.
NBC News did a story on which high school quarterbacks in Purdy's class were ranked higher than him, and Holmberg's name appeared.
Holmberg and Purdy were both part of the 2022 NFL Draft Class. Purdy famously was picked as Mr. Irrelivant as pick No. 262. Due to injuries and solid play, Purdy has ascended from underdog to MVP finalist.
But of the 2022 draft class, Holmberg was ranked 11 spots higher than Purdy in high school. Holmberg told NBC what it felt like to give up the sport he loved playing.
"Maybe I felt that a little of that early on when I first stopped playing," the Duke grad and aspiring athletics administrator told NBC. "But now it's content. I'm not watching guys on Sundays and, 'Oh, I need to be out there.' I'm pretty OK with where I am now."
Holmberg played 18 games at Duke University across three seasons. The North Carolina native finished his college football career with seven passing and rushing touchdowns, 2358 yards passing, and 195 rushing yards.
He now resides in San Jose, working for the Sharks in the ticket sales department, just seven miles down the road from the home of the 49ers.
Props to SJHN for finding this story first. It was too good not to be written.
The 49ers take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII at 3:30 p.m. PST.
