The San Jose Sharks announced they have signed former Detroit Red Wings forward Filip Zadina to a one-year contract worth $1.1 million.
Zadina was the sixth overall pick in the 2018 draft and looked like he had star potential. Since then, Zadina has appeared in 190 NHL games and collected 68 points (28 goals, 40 assists). He set career highs in several offensive categories in the 2021-22 season, registering 24 points, ten goals, and 14 assists in 74 games. He ranked sixth among Red Wings forwards in assists that season.
Zadina has had a falling out with GM Steve Yzerman, and both sides mutually agreed to terminate his contract. Zadina had requested a trade, and the Red Wings could not find a deal.
His contract was worth an AAV of $1.825 million at the time, and he still had two years remaining.
The young Czech forward is now betting on himself to get a fresh start in the NHL.
The San Jose Sharks make a ton of sense for him as he will have plenty of opportunity to stay in the NHL in a top-six role. At 23, the Sharks and Mike Grier take a low-risk but high-reward chance on Zadina.
