The San Jose Sharks sent Nick Cicek and a 2024 fourth-round pick to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for centerman Jack Studnicka.
This trade makes a lot of sense for San Jose due to their injuries at the center position. Nico Sturm and Ryan Carpenter won't join the Sharks for their two-game road trip.
San Jose has had to deploy Luke Kunin and Filip Zadina at center while navigating injuries. While Kunin has played center in the past, he primarily has been a winger for the Sharks.
San Jose will get a young centerman for a low price, which is precisely how GM Mike Grier handled the Calen Addison trade with the Minnesota Wild.
Initially drafted by the Boston Bruins, Studnicka, 24, has played in 90 NHL games and has 16 points (6 goals, 10 assists).
Studnicka has seven points in nine games for the Canucks AHL affiliate Abbotsford Canucks.
San Jose sent beloved defenseman Nick Cicek the other way. While fans love Cicek, he didn't have enough talent to become a full-time NHL defenseman.
This season, Cicek had three points in 18 games for the San Jose Barracuda. He played 108 career games for the Barracuda, finishing with 31 points. He has 16 NHL games, with three career assists for the Sharks.
Abbotsford currently sits fourth in the AHL's Pacific Division. They currently have three AHL rookie defensemen. Cicek will bring leadership and experience to the backend while being a quality defender.
Studnicka joins the Sharks in Arizona but will not face the Coyotes. He will likely make his debut against the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday.
