The San Jose Sharks are hitting the ice for the first time in over five months tonight, as they visit the Honda Center to face the Anaheim Ducks in preseason action. 

The Sharks are going with a fairly young roster, leaving many of their star players back in the Bay Area.

17:03 The Ducks' young stars connect to tie things up, Cutter Gauthier to Jackson LaCombe. McKeown seemed to be in strong position, Dickinson likely would've liked that one back as he was a little too far forward.

13:53 Leo Carlsson shows why the Philadelphia Flyers signed him to such a massive offer sheet over the summer. Nice move in the slot to get around Samuel Huo and puts it past Comrie to give the Ducks their first lead of the night. 

The Sharks' fourth line has been on the ice for both goals against, not a good look for the Barracuda players. 

8:00 Dangerous turnover by Giles in the defensive zone, but Sharks are able to recover.

6:15 Solid defensive shift by the fourth line, Leo Sahlin-Wallenius and Sam Dickinson. Big blocked shots saved a goal.

Interesting that Pohlkamp is quarterbacking the first powerplay unit rather than Dickinson.

Overall, the first period went as expected given the difference in quality between the teams' lineups tonight. Pohlkamp looked solid on the blue line, while Ethan Cardwell was standing out early as well. Sahlin-Wallenius was making some good defensive plays too. The fourth line was struggling, but that's to be expected since they've been out there against the Ducks' top line.

Right after the halfway point in the game, the Sharks made a goaltender swap, bringing in Matt Davis for Eric Comrie. 

9:19 The Ducks' penalty kill remains perfect, killing off their second penalty. 

8:55 Former Duck Brett Leason sets up Jimmy Huntington with a well-placed pass in the slot. Huntington beats Brossoit to tie things up.

8:08 Libor Hajek takes down Nikita Nesterenko and is called for interference, giving the Ducks their first power play. 

7:45 The Sharks' penalty kill never had a chance, as just 23 seconds into the Ducks' power play, Carlsson connects with Beckett Sennecke to restore Anaheim's lead.

2:49 The first major scrum of the night takes place behind the Sharks' net. Ostapchuk had a painful shift, blocking a couple of shots while throwing the body.

:57 Ty Dellandrea was hit awkwardly into the boards. Seems fine for now, but might be worth keeping an eye on. 

The second period really showed the difference in talent levels in tonight's lineups. The Ducks were dominant, but the Sharks' squad, which is mainly made up of AHLers, was holding up pretty well. 

17:23 Andre Gasseau drops the gloves with Travis Mitchell. Both get five minute majors, but there were no other penalties.

16:56 The Ducks head back to the power play as Anthony Vincent sits for interference. 

16:13 Sam Dickinson makes a nice defensive play to stop Carlsson from scoring his second goal of the night.

15:50 The Sharks get a 2-on-0 attempt, but unable to beat Brossoit. 

13:59 Great play by Wetsch to take advantage of a falling Duck to earn himself a breakaway. Got two shots off, but was denied on both occasions by Brossoit. 

11:50 Sennecke completes the natural hat trick, making it a 5-2 game after scoring on a breakaway. 

9:33 A couple of shots by Huntington, but he's unable to score. 

8:50 Some friendly-fire for the Ducks, as former Shark Mikael Granlund took a hard hit from Gauthier. 

6:16 Alex Killorn and Tristan Luneau connect with a give-and-go play to make it 6-2. 

5:20 Ethan Cardwell heads to the penalty box for high-sticking to give the Ducks another power play chance. 

Although the result didn't go their way, there were some positives for the Sharks. The players competing for an NHL job stood out above their peers while the AHLers, for the most part, were able to hang with NHL caliber competition.
