Here is what I think are the best three options for the San Jose Sharks this upcoming draft.
By finishing with a record of 22-44-16, the San Jose Sharks were the 29th-best team in the NHL. With the NHL Draft Lottery on the horizon, the Sharks have the potential to finish in five different positions. Here's who I think the Sharks should select for its top three possible draft spots.
This is pretty self-explanatory. Bedard is the number one draft prospect for the 2023 NHL Draft. In 57 games as the captain of the Regina Pats this season, Bedard had 71 goals and 72 assists. One stat that is otherworldly is Bedard's shots on goal, 360. Bedard averaged 6.31 shots on goal per game. In comparison, in 82 games this season, Connor McDavid averaged 4.29 shots per game. Bedard had eight more shots than McDavid did in ten fewer games. Bedard is a generational talent.
Michkov is an interesting case due to his contract in the KHL. He is signed through the 2025-26 season. In 27 games for HK Sochi, Michkov had nine goals and 11 assists as a 17-year-old. His offensive skill set is a superstar talent. The way he thinks the offensive game is not found very often in prospects. The Sharks will need a game-breaker, and if they don't get Bedard, then Michkov has the potential to be that superstar talent this team lacks.
Carlsson is a dynamic center and was just named the top international draft prospect by the NHL. Carlsson had 25 points in 44 games for Orebro of the SHL, Sweden's top hockey league. He also had six points in seven games during the World Junior Championship. Listed at 6'3 and 194 lbs, his size is valuable down the middle. He is ranked third on this list because the dynamic potential talent of Michkov outweighs a lot of what Carlsson can bring. He will be a star, but he will need to work on his skating to make it to the top of the NHL.
