We’re now just 50 days away from the San Jose Sharks’ opening night at the SAP Center against the Vegas Golden Knights.
Throughout the history of the Sharks, there have only been four players who have worn the number 50, with the first player wearing it in 1994. That player was Czech forward Jaroslav Otevrel who played a total of 16 games in the NHL before returning to Europe. Unfortunately, his career was cut short due to an incident that left him paralyzed in 1996 while playing in Finland.
Next, Finnish winger Hannes Hyvonen wore the number 50 in six games with the Sharks during the 2001-02 season before moving to the Columbus Blue Jackets for the 2002-03 season. He currently works as an assistant coach for Ässät in the Finnish Liiga.
The most well known player to wear the number 50 for the team in teal is Chris Tierney who wore it for parts of four seasons in the late 2010s. He played a total of 284 games with the Sharks, and ultimately played 649 total NHL games before heading overseas for the 2024-25 season.
Defenseman Brinson Pasichnuk most recently wore the number for the Sharks, playing in four games during the 2020-21 season before ending his professional career before his 25th birthday.
