We’re officially just 54 days away from the San Jose Sharks kicking off their season at the SAP Center against the Vegas Golden Knights.
It took a while in the history of the Sharks for a player to wear the number 54, but since then, it’s been a fairly regular occurrence. The history of the number 54 began on January 29, 2013, when Nick Petrecki made his NHL debut.
Petricki, a first-round draft pick of the Sharks in 2008, was a highly touted prospect early on, but ultimately only made one career appearance in the NHL. He last played for the Indy Fuel of the ECHL during the 2015-16 season.
It would be nearly a decade before the number 54 was worn for the team in teal again, as Scott Reedy was next to wear it during the 2021-22 season. He appeared in 35 career NHL games, all of which came during that season. During that span, he scored seven goals and added two assists. Most recently, Reedy played with the American Hockey League’s Milwaukee Admirals last season.
Enforcer Givani Smith took over the number when he arrived in the Bay Area for the 2023-24 season. Smith would spend parts of two seasons with the Sharks before being traded to the Colorado Avalanche. His stint in Colorado would be short, though, as he’d be traded to Philadelphia before the end of the season.
The current player wearing number 54 is Patrick Giles, who is unlikely to make the opening night roster, but is a candidate to get playing time over the course of the season. Last season, he played eight games for the Sharks and scored a single goal.
